Insomnia is a major issue that can affect people of any age. 1. Encourage the senior to give up coffee.
This doesn’t mean the senior has to give up coffee altogether, but in the afternoon and evening hours it would be a good idea to refrain from any caffeinated beverages.
Caffeine takes approximately eight hours to completely leave the system. So, if the senior is having a cup of coffee after dinner to relax while watching TV, even if it is decaffeinated coffee there is still a considerable amount of caffeine in it. They may have trouble falling asleep.
Even if they can fall asleep they may be waking up within a short amount of time and then having more difficulty falling back asleep; that can be directly related to caffeine.
Encourage the senior to give up caffeine after 2 PM for one week and see how things are working out with their sleep patterns.
2. Avoid overwhelming stimulation.
During the evening hours is when people should begin relaxing, unwinding, and not getting involved in financial planning, checking bank statements, running around and trying to take care of the laundry and clean the house, and all of those other things.
The senior should be encouraged to relax and unwind.
Television can be a stimulant rather than a relaxation technique. Encourage reading and other quiet activities an hour or so before normal bedtime. This helps to get the mind and body ready for the coming sleep.
3. Consider relaxation techniques.
Some people enjoy sipping tea (as long as there is no caffeine in it), listening to relaxing music, or even going for a stroll an hour or two before bedtime.
These can all be beneficial at helping the person become more relaxed and in tune with the sleeping hours ahead.
