First, create a plan. Your mother, father, or other family member who has been relying on you for weeks or months is showing signs of strengthening. This is when you ideally want them to begin taking care of themselves with you only offering support when absolutely necessary.
It can be considered weaning them off the care you’ve been providing. After a while, the more support and care and assistance a person receives, the more they have a tendency to rely on it. Eventually, that individual may have less confidence in their own capability and will continue to call you day after day after day.
When you start putting the pressure on them to perform these tasks, whether it’s laundry, cooking for themselves, vacuuming, or anything else, you start putting the confidence back in their hands that they can actually do this in a healthy manner.
Start making time for your own interests.
You may have given up spending time with friends, playing sports, exercising, or just relaxing at the end of a long day. Now is the time to begin investing in those activities and areas of interest once more.
If you wait until you are no longer a caregiver at all, you might find you have way too much time on your hands. When people have too much time, they often have difficulty narrowing their focus in getting started back into their own life once again.
Call friends and schedule a meeting time at a local café, play racquetball or golf, or do whatever you use to do with them regularly. Set time aside for yourself to relax. Start getting into the habit of focusing on you once more. With all the stress you dealt with as a family caregiver, it might take you a while to become accustomed once more to life as you once knew it.
